Without explicit objectives and constraints, we can find ourselves optimizing some default program defined by our nature, society, or government. This optimization can lead to thousands of shell companies, fast-food restaurants at every corner, and post-truth politics. The design of interpretable, balanced, and sustainable objective functions is arguably the most critical task in the age of artificial intelligence. Relevant and transparent objectives and constraints are inherently necessary to move forward efficiently and effectively.
